With a simple lines and arching mirrors, antique vanities have
an under-stated elegance that could enhance any bedroom. One owner
saw something different in his handsome vanity: a pair of well-made,
identical tables that would look perfect on opposite sides of the
bed.
After the mirrors were removed, the tables were rubbed with Formby's®
Furniture Refinisher, which did away with the dark varnish yet
preserved the walnut's patina.. Then the wood was stained with a mixture
of equal parts Minwax®
Wood Finish Red Mahogany and Special Walnut stains to even
out the overall tone and give the tables a more unified look. A protective
topcoat of Minwax®
Fast-Drying Polyurethane Semi-Gloss completed the next chapter
in the story of this nearly forgotten antique.
Tips & Techniques:
- When mixing two stains to create a custom wood tone, test a
couple of "recipes" before deciding how much of each
to use. A dark stain usually works best on deep-toned wood while
a light stain will have little or no effect.
